2024 Northern District Practice for New Lawyers Recap
On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse hosted the Northern District Practice for New Lawyers and Lawyers-To-Be, a dynamic and educational CLE seminar specifically designed for new lawyers, summer associates, interns, and law students. Held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Ceremonial Courtroom, this event provided attendees with an immersive learning experience focused on developing written and oral advocacy skills in federal court.
Real-Time Oral Argument Experience
The seminar featured Judge Matthew Kennelly presiding over oral arguments for two dispositive motions from pending cases. This live demonstration allowed attendees to witness federal court proceedings firsthand and gain a deeper understanding of courtroom dynamics and judicial decision-making.
Judge Kennelly, a senior judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, drew on his extensive experience to provide context and insights during the proceedings. His background, which includes presiding over significant cases like ACLU v. AT&T, made his observations and potential real-time rulings particularly enlightening for those beginning their legal careers.
Distinguished Panel Discussion on Advocacy
Following the oral arguments, a distinguished panel of federal judges shared invaluable guidance on best practices in written and oral advocacy. The panel included District Judge John Kness, District Judge Lindsay Jenkins, and Magistrate Judge Heather McShain, each bringing unique experiences and perspectives to the discussion.
District Judge John Kness, appointed in 2020, has a diverse legal background, having served as General Counsel at the College of DuPage and as an Assistant United States Attorney. He offered practical advice on effective communication and the importance of clarity in legal writing and courtroom presentation.
District Judge Lindsay Jenkins, who joined the bench in 2023 after an extensive career as an assistant United States attorney, emphasized the significance of thorough preparation and strategic thinking. Drawing on her experience in prosecuting high-profile cases, such as the corruption trial of Chicago Public Schools Chief Barbara Byrd-Bennett, she provided actionable insights for handling complex legal issues.
Magistrate Judge Heather McShain shared her experience from her time as an Assistant United States Attorney and her role in the Civil and Criminal Divisions. Her focus on precision in legal writing and strategic advocacy offered attendees a well-rounded understanding of federal court expectations. Judge McShain underscored the value of mastering foundational skills early in one's legal career.
Interactive Q&A and Networking Reception
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, giving attendees the chance to engage with the judges directly. Participants asked questions about effective advocacy, judicial expectations, and best practices for courtroom success. This dialogue provided an opportunity for emerging legal professionals to gain tailored advice from seasoned judges.
The event wrapped up with a networking reception hosted by the Younger Lawyers Division. Attendees had the chance to connect with their peers and members of the judiciary in a casual setting, enjoying refreshments while discussing the seminar's key takeaways. This provided a valuable opportunity for participants to expand their professional networks and exchange insights with fellow attendees.
