The Hon. Blanche M. Manning, of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, passed away in September 2020. The District Court and the Federal Bar Association, Chicago Chapter, are holding a public, in-person event to remember Judge Manning in the Court’s Ceremonial Courtroom at 4 p.m. on February 28, 2023, with a reception to follow. Judge Manning was the first African-American woman to serve on and be elected to the Illinois Appellate Court. She went on to be appointed as a federal district judge in Chicago by President Clinton in 1994. She served with distinction on our court. Upon her passing, she left the court family and the bar with many fond memories of her service, her kind and caring demeanor, and her love of music as a jazz saxophonist. Our panel, moderated by Judge Coleman, will consist of a judge who served with Judge Manning and four former members of the judge’s chambers staff: the Hon. Jacqueline P. Cox of the Bankruptcy Court; law clerks Devlin Schoop and Cynthia Cohan; courtroom deputy Robbie Hunt; and court reporter Patrick Mullen. The panel members will share their fond memories of the judge, as will other attendees before an open microphone after the panel discussion. The event also will feature a recording of Judge Manning on the saxophone and musical interludes by a band to which she was connected, “The Scales of Justice.”
