Until the mid-20th century, the United States restricted citizenship based on race, effectively barring Asian American immigrants from becoming citizens. More than 50 people tried challenging this law, including three Asian Americans who took their cases to the United States Supreme Court 100 years ago.
During this webinar program, historians and practicing lawyers will discuss the history of these cases, the consequences for people who should have been the first Asian American lawyers in the United States, and how the naturalization laws changed after World War II.
