Looking Back and Moving Forward: A Reflection on Women in Law
On March 19th, the Federal Bar Association Chicago Chapter organized a special Continuing Legal Education (CLE) session titled “Looking Back & Moving Forward: Where We Are, Where We’ve Been, and What’s Next,” in honor of Women’s History Month. The CLE brought together over 75 members of the bar and judiciary to shed light on the past accomplishments and present challenges of women in the legal profession.
Moderated by the Honorable Rebecca Pallmeyer, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the panel featured a lineup of esteemed speakers: the Honorable Lindsay Jenkins of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois; the Honorable Patricia Brown Holmes, Managing Partner/Founder of Riley Safer Holmes & Cancilla; Janelle Carter Anderson, Vice President & General Counsel at The Heico Companies; and Noelle Brennan, Founder and Partner of Noelle Brennan & Associates. These professionals from various sectors of the legal industry shared their insights and experiences, offering a holistic view of the advancements and hurdles for women in law.
Highlights from Looking Back and Moving Forward
The panel discussion at the “Looking Back & Moving Forward” seminar provided a comprehensive exploration of several pivotal themes. The event commenced with tributes to pioneering women lawyers who have carved pathways for subsequent generations in the legal profession, and the mentors and role models who continue to inspire today’s legal practitioners.
A significant portion of the conversation was devoted to the ongoing challenges confronting women and diverse attorneys. Panelists delved into systemic obstacles, workplace biases, and the glass ceiling effect that still impacts many in the field. Panelists highlighted the importance of self-advocacy, emphasizing how individual actions and voices are vital for promoting change within the legal community and beyond.
The discussion further emphasized the need for continuous efforts to cultivate diversity and inclusion within the legal field. Panelists shared innovative strategies and personal experiences related to fostering inclusive environments, mentorship programs, and policies that support access and inclusion at all levels of the legal profession.
Attendees of the seminar were also eligible to receive 1 hour of Professional Responsibility/DEI CLE credit, underlining the event’s dedication to professional growth and ethical legal practice. This component of the seminar reinforced the importance of ongoing education and awareness as tools for enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal sector.
